The History
The Manhasset name was founded in 1840 and derived from the Native word Manhasset, which roughly translates to The Island Neighborhood. Oysters were at an all-time high, while dairy farming still maintained its popularity. In 1898, the Long Island Railroad brought a sense of modernity through its arrival on the farm's land- as well as an influx of people who wanted country homes they could commute easily to within Manhattan. Manhasset Valley and Spinney Hill proved popular amongst these people, attracting skilled laborers and immigrant families alike.

Manhasset falls mainly under the jurisdiction of the Manhasset Union Free School District and partly under that of the Great Neck Union Free School District. Children who live in and go to public schools in this area will do so within either district based on which part of town they live in. Private schools exist, too, such as St. Mary's High School. Two library districts serve this area - the Great Neck Library District and the Manhasset Library District, which are coterminous with both school districts; i.e., there is only one district for each type of entity--schools/libraries--depending on where you live.
