The Unique History of Northport
Northport is a historic fishing village located on the northern coast of Long Island in Suffolk County, NY. Initially named Great Cow Harbor by settlers from England, the town was given its permanent name when it became recognized as a separate entity from other communities. When the community decided to create their own municipal government in 1894, they knew what they were doing when they chose Northport as their official title; this way, everyone living there could feel connected to one another while still retaining some individuality (similar to townships).

As of the 2010 Census, there were 7,401 people residing in the town.[28] The population density was 3.29 people per square mile. There were 3,952 housing units at an average density of 1.32 per square mile. There were 2,955 households, out of which 33% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59% were married couples living together, 8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29% were non-families. 25% of all households was made up of individuals, and 9 % had someone who was 65 years old or older. The average household size was 2.54, and the average family size was 3.07.
